WHEN YOU PASS THROUGH THE WATERS, I WILL BE WITH YOU: AND WHEN YOU PASS THROUGH THE RIVERS, THEY WILL NOT SWEEP OVER YOU.WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THE FIRE, YOU WILL NOT BE BURNED; THE FLAMES WILL NOT SET YOU A BLAZE. Is.43.2
You can look at yourself in the mirror all day long and tell yourself that you are going to give a great speech on stage, that you are going to get that new job, or that you are going to pursue the romantic relationship of your dreams, hoping that looking into that mirror will help you to move forward with more confidence and self-esteem.
But, absent of actually facing your fears, you will probably find that self-confidence on the deepest and most fundamental level continues to elude you. Realize that fear is often based on unhelpful or inaccurate interpretation, and the choice to perceive negative aspects. Avoiding your fears gives them power. The time has come to face your fears and reclaim your power. Here is how you start:
Examine your fears. Get them out in the open. What is it that scares you so much? What are the common fears that affect your daily life? Fear usually comes down to insecurity and uncertainty. Be honest with yourself. Acknowledge your fear. Trying to convince yourself that your fear is nonexistent is a dishonest and ineffective approach.
Educate yourself on your fears. You need to learn more about what makes you fearful of these situations. Past experience is a common source. Many people hold fear vicariously, having heard someone speak about a situation, or having seen something on TV. Educating yourself on what makes you fearful is vital to your effort to move past your fear.
Select one fear that you want to dissolve. Disregard how daunting the fear may be; you will face it anyway. To select one fear will prevent you from being overwhelmed, as you might be if you look at all of your fears at once.
Develop faith in something. To face fears, you must have faith, which can take any number of forms; religion, god, yourself – you have to believe in something. Faith will give you the courage to face your fears. You will develop the confidence that everything will be okay. (and it will!)
Change your outlook. Remain present and in the moment. Dwelling in the past or the future will cultivate more fear and the circumstances that support fear. Every moment offers the opportunity to choose a positive or negative perspective; choose to align yourself with the positive.
Go on and do the thing that scares you most. Get on that airplane, rush out on the stage, go to that dinner party alone, ask for the promotion you deserve. You will feel strong, empowered, and fearless. Remember to celebrate and reward yourself for your achievement! A surefire way to face your fears is to attend the Firewalk Instructor Training offered at our karate school. In addition to firewalking, you will master accelerated learning, glasswalking, steel bar bending, arrow breaking, board breaking, smashing cinder block caps with your bare hand, and many other remarkable skills. You will learn leading-edge exercises that facilitate personal empowerment. When you have completed the 4-day course, you will be certified to teach all of these skills. While certified instructor status offers exceptional value, many people take this course solely for extraordinary personal empowerment and spiritual insight. (Chiropractors, salesmen, corporate trainers, meeting planners, spiritual leaders, motivational speakers, and many more have found this course to be invaluable.)
Attitude is everything; I call it the first holy grail of mental skills training. What we think directly affects how we feel, which directly affects what we do. Therefore, attitude will determine the quality of our approaches, our performances, and our responses; it determines our altitude. Does this mean that athletes who are confident and having fun play better than those who are frustrated and timid? Absolutely! So which comes first, the chicken or the egg? I don’t know. Which comes first: successful outcomes or a positive, confident, fun attitude? For many, success does, but that’s not good! For the greatest athletes in the world, the ideal attitude for performance comes first!
Attitude is a function of what we think about/focus on. Most people’s attitude goes with the flow, thinking about/focusing on current events, current needs, current fears, current desires, etc. That can be good, but can just as easily be bad if you’re in a raft and the current is, for example, the Niagara River. It might not even seem dangerous at the moment, but it could be leading towards a great fall. My reminder to athletes: you have extremely little control over what goes on around you, but total control of how you choose to respond to it. In that choice lies your freedom, your happiness, and your personal power. Choose wisely.
Many people have a less-than-ideal attitude toward “failure.” Instead of viewing it as a stepping stone to success, they see it as an end in itself – a bad one. If they would remember the wonderful goal of approaching their potential, it would be easy to remember that we learn and grow from adversity. It took me a while to accept this, but I am now a firm believer that adversity is always good for you, as long as you survive! You survive as long as it doesn’t kill you and or cause you to quit.

True wealth is not money. It is comfort, safety, peace, freedom and ease. These feelings are a natural by product of an open heart. They are a gift of grace. Once the heart is open wide, true wealth follows.
Grace is, among its other definitions “a sense of fitness or propriety,” and ” divine love and protection freely bestowed on humanity” …Grace is a tangible manifestation of gods love for you…All ways see yourself deserving of it, you acknowledge it, and give thanks for it..
The more you acknowledge grace, and say “thank you” for moments of grace, the more it will appear in you life….A good way to start this process is by saying to yourself: ” God loves me. I deserve Gods Love”.

Hanshi McCall…Final thoughts on the Class of 2009 Black Belts:
At the end of the three day review, it was a test of will, faith and courage. The Brown Belts started as concerned and doubtful students and left as Black Belts with the “Heart of a Warrior” . The Black Belt panel of review which was without a doubt one of the best in the American Shorei/Shorin Karatedo and American freestyle Karate history made comments all weekend about the heart and the power and character of each candidate.
It is a sad time for me after a Black Belt exam. I always leave wondering if we did enough to change their will to win and their Tomoe Warrior character. Honor and Truth we speak, but will they live it, as things will never make us happy. Giving will make you happy and I always give with an open heart. I want every Black Belt to feel that I supplied the material to change the Tao (Way) in their life. My door is always open to my Black Belts. As long as I am breathing you have a person who you can talk with and share with for the rest of our time on this earth. We are all connected to a higher creator and God should always be first in your Heart. I take every Black Belt exam serious and only we can hope that we did give each candidate the skills to protect and guide them to greater goals in their life. It is always hard to let go…but we have to let go and let these New and Improved Black Belts stand on our shoulders and see new grounds to be covered in the Martial Arts World.
This is a new beginning and they still have much to learn, but like the Decision Stones taken from the Oceans shores were given at the Tea Ceremony, they will grow and be strong and make decision as big as the ocean with Gods help that will keep them strong in the Martial Arts.
For most of us grace appears uninvited and unacknowledged. But, you can greatly amplify the presence of grace in your life if you see yourself as deserving of it. You invite it in, you acknowledge it, and give thanks for it. To me grace is a tangible manifestation of God’s love for me. Always keep God in your Heart and work on spiritual clarity (sweating and fasting and praying)
All Black Belts can feel free to visit the Test site and feel the energy you left and mediate and remember the steps you took into Black Belt and your sweat and love of the Art that allowed you to complete this awesome Test.
I want to thank Shihan McClellan for his love of the Art and commitment to produce only the best Black Belts. Shihan has such character and lets no stone go un-turned. Thanks to Renshi Godfrey and Mr. Lingerfelt for never letting the candle go out in the Fort Mill school and for always being there to support our cause in our quest to make only the best Black Belts. Thanks to Benny Phifer for maintaining his commit to God and the Martial Arts. Thanks to Mr. Sharpe known as “Fire Keeper” for staying in the game as he is a great teacher. Thanks to Stacy Wright for her commitment to the art and helping to with the exam. Thanks to Sensei Ward for always being a shinning light for the students and his character training comes from the heart. Sensei Keever has shown he is a great leader and teacher with complete knowledge of all the material. If not for him and Mr. Ward the class of 2009 would not have been. They give so freely of their time to keep the Saturday Morning program alive and turning lemons into lemonade. Sensei Matt McCall stepped-up the 3 mile run this year and help keep the fire burning in the Art. Sensei Wright has raised his standards and helped get these new Black Belts to meet the standards. This year Mr. Hager show the elite Black belt group what it takes to be strong in the Lord and Karate. Mr. Joe Griffin always brings the Black Belts something new to challenge the heart and keep standards up with his vast knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu and reality Training. Shihan McClellan and Mr. Griffin are the inventors of the Mountain Challenge and it was an awesome event for 2009. We will never forget our first Mountain Challenge and beware of the next Mountain event as it will be even better.ve always loved karate and every day I think of God and my family and Master Funakoshi. He said “think of everyday as Karate Training”, and I do.
“Funakoshi was a man of Tao. He placed no emphasis on competitions, record breaking or championships. He placed emphasis on individual self perfection. He believe in the common decency and respect that one human being owed to another. He was the master of masters.
I am now a Master of Masters and it feels good that God gave me the heath, and family and courage to never give up on my students and the love of Karate.
There is a probation period after a Black Belt Exam to complete their final requirements and to work on self perfection. Learn to be Black Belts of high standards. Failure to complete the requirements (teaching commitments, etc) or to show no respect for their self or fellow black Belts will result in a re-test or Failure . Certificates will be awarded after the probation period along with Black Belts with your name in Kanju.
In closing People always ask me why our exams are so long and our thoughts are “we have high Standards for our Black Belt and each time we raise the Bar”
Samurai’s & Samurai Ladies and that un-natural speed
These are stories that are true ,they have been lived out by the old sensei.
We have been told and educated on the Samurai and what they did to keep their legacy in our imagination . I have been told many stories and legends to keep me on the edge of my seat for many, many years. I believe they are Samurai who lived among us today. They are a very powerful group within our population who you would never know unless you train with one or happen to have met one by going to a martial arts event or function even then when you face one , how do you know if he or she is Samurai?
